Fiber Face-Off: Unraveling the Mysteries of Insoluble vs. Soluble Fiber for Gut Health!

“Beans, beans, they’re good for your heart; the more you eat the more you…” well, you know what comes next… 

We’ve all heard this little nursery rhyme as children, but do you know why this is true? 

Beans are chock-full of a nutrient called fiber! Fiber has a ton of amazing health benefits, including helping you stay full and satisfied for longer, slowing the absorption of fats and sugars from foods, promoting digestive system health, improving regularity of bowel movements, and helping to lower one’s cholesterol. However, fiber can be a little hard on your digestive system, especially if your body isn’t used to it.

At Main Squeeze, our juices filter out the insoluble fiber while keeping soluble fiber in the juice. You may be thinking “what does this mean for the nutrition content and benefits of the juices?” 

Just like the names imply, insoluble fiber does not dissolve in your stomach and soluble fiber does. Because of this difference, while insoluble fiber bounces all over the walls and acts as a workout for your digestive tract, soluble fiber dissolves, creating a gel-like consistency. Therefore, soluble fiber is easier on your digestive system, but is still able to provide the many other health benefits of fiber. 

While it is still recommended to get insoluble fiber most of the time, this is some of the rationale behind our juice cleanses. With the lack of insoluble fiber in our juices, your stomach is able to take a break like your muscles do when you take a rest day from working out. With the inclusion of soluble fiber, you still get the satisfaction, satiety, and other health benefits, while still allowing your digestive system to recover.

BONUS TIP: Most Americans do not get the recommended amount of fiber each day, which is 25g for women and 38g for men. In fact, a majority don’t even reach half of that amount. When you are not on a cleanse, try adding in an extra fiber-packed food each day to help you reach that goal! Just make sure you add extra water with it to help with digestion.
